A Full Guide to Coach in 2026
Not many American fashion brands are more recognizable than Coach, and in 2026 its sales are growing sharply. The label was created as a tiny leather workshop, became a handbag specialist and now sells clothing, footwear and accessories in stores across the globe. Its founding idea has stayed steady for decades: well-made leather goods priced below the traditional European luxury houses. That niche has been defined by a federal court as accessible luxury, different from mass-market fashion and also from true luxury.
In the sections that follow you will find the story of how Coach started, who owns and runs it, how far the business has grown and what goes into its range. Since the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet regularly leads to confusion, it explains that as well. The numbers carry the dates of their sources, and the prices quoted are observed market prices and not an official price list.
From a Manhattan Leather Workshop to an American Label
In 1941, a small family-run leather workshop was founded in Manhattan, and it is to that workshop that Coach traces its beginnings. In Coach’s own account, six artisans toiled in a loft on 34th Street, producing wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods for men. Handbags came later, and so did the Coach name, which dates from about 1960 or 1961. Miles and Lillian Cahn were not the original owners of the workshop, although the couple is at times mistakenly called its founders.
The Cahns joined the business in 1946, and Miles was running the factory by around 1950. The Cahns acquired the business from its original owners in 1961, taking charge of the business. The suggestion of adding women’s handbags reportedly came from Lillian Cahn, and this step redefined the company. The leather finish called glovetanned leather, modeled on the way a worn baseball glove softens with use, is credited to Miles Cahn.
Bonnie Cashin at Coach
No designer has been more closely associated with coach denim bag early Coach than Bonnie Cashin, the first to serve as its lead designer. She is said to have worked under contract rather than as an employee, and she was not a co-founder. Her start date is a minor puzzle, because Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. What is clear is that she worked with Coach until 1974.
In 1964 Cashin introduced the brass turnlock closure, which Coach says was based on the toggle on the top of her convertible. Brighter colors, side pockets and coin-purse details are also attributed to her, and together they livened up the brand’s look. Styles such as the Cassie crossbody use the turnlock, which remains one of Coach’s best-known details.
Owners, Listings and the Birth of Tapestry
Sara Lee Corporation took over Coach in July 1985. The company made its stock market debut in October 2000, and Sara Lee is said to have sold out entirely the following year. Instead of being a mid-century heritage motif, the “C” monogram dates from far more recent times: Coach debuted its Signature collection built around it in 2001. Coach, Inc. became Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, while its ticker went from COH to TPR.
Only the parent company adopted a new name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Coach, Inc. had purchased Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry sold that shoe label to Caleres in a deal that was completed on 4 August 2025. Of the only two brands Tapestry owns in 2026, namely Coach and Kate Spade, Coach is by far the more substantial.
The Reasons the Capri Deal Collapsed
Capri Holdings, which owns Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo, was the target of a purchase agreement unveiled by Tapestry on 10 August 2023. The Federal Trade Commission contested the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to block it with a preliminary injunction. A federal judge in the Southern District of New York issued the requested preliminary injunction on 24 October 2024. While it was not a final ruling on the merits, the injunction barred the companies from closing as long as the challenge continued.
In its decision, the court accepted that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, set apart from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Saying that the legal process was unlikely to finish before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri ended their agreement on 14 November 2024. As the acquisition was never finalized, Tapestry does not own any Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.
Coach’s Leadership Today
Coach’s parent company, Tapestry, is run by its chief executive, Joanne Crevoiserat. Todd Kahn leads the brand itself as Coach’s CEO and brand president, a role he took on an interim basis in July 2020 and held permanently from April 2021. Creative leadership belongs to Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was announced in June 2013.
Vevers’s debut collection for Coach was reportedly presented in February 2014, and he is still in place as Coach’s creative director in 2026. Reportedly, he spent time at Mulberry and then served as creative director at Loewe before joining Coach. Under his direction, Coach has drawn on its archive, reviving older designs and recasting vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. On 11 February 2026, he unveiled his Fall 2026 collection at the Cunard Building in New York.
Coach by the Numbers
For the sharpest picture of Coach’s scale, turn to Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026. Tapestry overall posted $8,004.2 million, of which Coach’s net sales accounted for $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year. In other words, Coach generated around 86% of group sales.
At the close of that fiscal year, Coach ran 973 directly run stores, split between 336 in North America and 637 in international markets. A figure of about 1,299 stores also appears in some sources, but it counts every Tapestry store rather than Coach alone. Tapestry also said the average unit retail price of Coach handbags increased at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. Part of that rise, according to the company, comes from fewer promotions.

What Coach Sells: Bags, Clothing and Shoes
Structured icons are paired with soft, slouchy leather in coach handbags today, and handbags remain the heart of the business. The Tabby, based on a 1970s archive shape, launched in 2019; the Rogue was introduced in 2016 and relaunched in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, launched in August 2024. After being shown on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall went on sale in February 2025. At the high end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was observed at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, whereas the Kisslock Frame Bag, reported as the opening look of the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. Coach Originals bags are not vintage: these are newly made reissues of archive designs.
Ready-to-wear now carries real weight in the offer: coach clothing for Fall 2026 brought varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. Blazers, A-line skirts and flared trousers also featured in the same show, as did floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. Fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall, and the footwear line also includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker. In addition, Coach oversees Coach (Re)Loved, a 2021 launch reported to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, as well as Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand that debuted on 20 April 2023.
Where to Shop: Coach Store, Coach Outlet and Online
The largest flagships carry the Coach House name, while any full-price coach store stocks the current collections. Another Coach House, at 645 Fifth Avenue, is reportedly targeted for 2027, after the New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue, which reportedly opened in 2016. Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis stock the brand in the UK, and London’s Coach House on Regent Street similarly opened in 2016. To see the latest season, look to the full-price range, whether you are after a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket.
Coach Outlet is Coach’s own official channel, comprising outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. Product made for the outlet channel was put at around 85% of outlet goods in a 2014 quote from Coach’s head of investor relations, but that figure is dated, and Tapestry has since raised the idea of bringing some full-price product into outlets. The public evidence falls short of supporting assertions that outlet bags are always inferior, or no different from boutique bags. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet are among the UK outlet store locations. People searching for the brand may type “couch” or “cosch”; in that case, check that any site promising steep discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
